Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Social studies has always been my passion. Throughout my whole life, I have loved learning about distant and faraway lands. I have seen that students also love being taken to faraway places without leaving their seats.

My students are mainly ninth and tenth grade English language learners from Latin America and the Middle East.

Despite coming from all over the globe, they have arrived with very little knowledge of the lands that previously surrounded them. I am hoping to open them up to the world around them and in the process, make the world seem smaller and friendlier to them. My school is in a working class community in Northern New Jersey.

I am also the coach of Academic Decathalon, composed of thirty-five students who compete against other schools in tests of knowledge, public speaking and writing. We meet every Monday and Thursday for practice.

My Project

Many of my students come from warm weather countries and arrive in the US without cold weather essentials. They walk home, up to two miles, without hats and gloves and with only a hoodie. We have had below freezing temperatures for ten straight days without a thaw in sight. These essentials will go a long way towards making their walk home more bearable.

Students need to feel safe and comfortable in order to learn effectively.

Unfortunately, many of my students do not take advantage of after school activities due to having to walk home in the cold. I hope that by supplying them with these essentials, I can make a difference.
