My Students

I am living the dream this year by being able to move back to my hometown and teach Fifth graders! Serving alongside my former teachers is the coolest experience! I serve a diverse group of kids who have many different interests and unique learning styles. I'm excited to take my students on a world-wide adventure as we dive into reading and explore literacy and social studies in new ways!

Fredrick Douglas said "Once you learn to read, you will be forever free", so in giving my students the tools to read, they are being empowered to choose the lives they want to lead.

This is my hope and my mission for each generation that walks into my classroom.

My Project

This project is designed to first provide appropriate lighting for daily reading with students. This year the lights have been turned out and our students are using lamps and Christmas lights to complete their work. Getting rid of harsh florescent lights has been known to increase student focus in the classroom. When we think of our own comfort needs when reading, we must consider that the same nuisances that bother us are heightened as a fifth grade student. The traditional desks and chairs of school, though valuable at times, do not provide an inviting atmosphere to spend hours reading. Giving students other, more inviting options in the classroom can only increase reading engagement and help students solidify a love for reading!

The video rockers, reading benches, and light strands are especially important when building and encouraging reading stamina in the classroom.

I want my students to desire coming to class, just as we often desire stealing away to our favorite coffee-shop for an afternoon. My classroom should be a place where kids want to come back over and over for the joy that my room provides. Please help me provide this friendly environment for my students!
