My Students

The students in my classes are a diverse group, from a multitude of backgrounds. Some are from families where they will be the first to attend college, while others are from families where paying the monthly bills is a challenge.

All students deserve an opportunity to create skills that they can take with them into the work force or to college.

They are eager for life skills that can help them, as they finish high school and move forward in their lives.

My Project

In my classroom, we do reading days once a week, and we share our writing once a week. One of the ways that I encourage my students to engage in literature and writing is by offering coffeehouse days. On these days students bring in their own mugs, and I provide hot beverages for them to consume while they share and have conversations. These materials will make this easier by allowing each student to choose and make their own beverage in my classroom. This experience mimics the book and writing clubs that many adults engage in with friends. By making the sharing and conversation a whole experience, students are more motivated to engage in the task.
