This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

A coffee cart project provides a meaningful, hands-on learning experience for students with multiple disabilities. Traditional classroom instruction can be challenging for these learners, who often benefit from practical, real-world activities that reinforce essential skills. Running a coffee cart creates an opportunity for students to actively participate in their learning by doing something tangible and purposeful. It transforms abstract concepts—like time management, counting money, and following directions—into real tasks they can see and feel.

Beyond academics, the coffee cart builds vital life and social skills.

Students take on roles such as greeter, cashier, and server, allowing them to practice communication, teamwork, and responsibility in a supportive environment. For non-verbal or minimally verbal students, even simple interactions like handing over a drink or using a picture exchange system promote connection and confidence. The project also helps develop routines and expectations, which is especially beneficial for students who thrive on structure and repetition.

Most importantly, a coffee cart gives students a sense of ownership and pride. They’re not just participating—they’re contributing. Seeing their efforts appreciated by staff and peers boosts their self-esteem and helps them feel like valuable members of the school community. It’s more than just a project; it’s a bridge to independence, self-worth, and future opportunities.
