Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my self-contained special education classroom, there is a community of learners of diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and grade levels. They are kind, resilient, and exceptional students interested in a wide range of activities from urban planning to basketball. The students in my special education class have mild to moderate intellectual, cognitive, and physical disabilities.

Our class is made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students; each student is unique, creating a diverse group of learners in my class with varying interests, strengths, abilities, and learning styles.

As a special education teacher, I work every day to find solutions and resources to help develop my students' academic, communication, and social skills.

My Project

I became a special education teacher because teaching students with special needs brings me so much joy; I have always been characterized by great empathy and a passion for helping children. As a person of color and an English language learner, I strive to support multilingual learners with disabilities to ensure that students receive instruction that supports both their language-learning and disability-related needs. The Pathfinders Summer Institute is an engaging virtual professional development opportunity in which I can learn to teach Python with engaging Robotics projects that truly motivate student mastery. I can use what I have learned to teach the CodeSpace Simulation Environment, where my students will complete a sampling of challenging missions, beginner-level Python coding, and working with physical CodeBots. I can provide my students with an experience and excitement of breathing life into robotics hardware with coding. Additionally, I strive to create an educational environment that is conducive to multilingual learners with disabilities’ academic, social and life-long success; promoting and emphasizing technology, environmental and financial sustainability, and entrepreneurship.
