My Students

Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. There are some families that are homeless and need more assistance. Many also come from military families. We have many cultures represented at our school. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STEAM clubs, and we are encouraging girls to participate in STEAM activities.

My Project

All aboard for STEM! Kids love trains and our students have been learning the basics of coding. We want to encourage our younger learners to get excited about careers in coding.

Our school is in a metro area that anticipates high need for those with coding skills in the coming years.

Companies are encouraging schools to promote coding education. We are incorporating coding into our school in many ways. In addition to all classes do Hour of Code, most teachers allow students to do coding on their iPads during free time. We have a STEM club that has several coding activities, A STEM cart that teachers can take to the classroom to use, a STEM night for families to come and learn together, and a full day Career/STEM event that features career information and hands on STEM events. All these have several coding related activities.

This project will add 4 sets of LEGO Coding Express which will allow some of our younger students to build a train and town set, at the same time using coding to direct the trains movements. With 4 sets we can have several stations so all students in a class can work together with a group to perform specified tasks or design their own plan. The teamwork aspect is very important. One of the workplace skills that students need to learn is that of teamwork.

Some of our older STEM Club members will help devise some activities for the younger students.

We are working on getting progressive coding activities from k-5 to gradually develop coding skills and interests in all of our students. These sets will help get the youngest students on board! We will use them in the classroom, STEM Club, family night and our Career/STEM yearly event.
