My Students

Every day I see different students in my lower grade STEM preps. My goal is to get them all excited about programming at an early age so they pursue more knowledge outside of class.

My students attend an inner-city public school in a major US city.

My students range in age from 5 to 15. The vast majority qualify for free lunch. I see my youngest students once per week, with a different class each day. These students have a thirst for STEM education that is unparalleled, but I am still working on acquiring all of the materials we need to really push their limits.

My Project

The primary purpose for this project is to provide my younger students with a few iPads to work in small groups to program using Scratch Jr, a simplified version of the drag-and-drop programming language Scratch 2.0. As the students learn the basics in Kindergarten through 2nd grade, they will advance to Scratch 2.0 in the middle grades. Additionally, the iPads will provide the rest of the students I teach with another tool to use in our STEM classroom and our after school programs.

Getting these iPads will make a difference for my students because it will allow them to learn the basics of programming in small groups and at a much younger age.

Although Scratch 2.0 is available online, Scratch Jr. is an app for the iPad and is a great way to start. I have worked with my youngest students introducing them to the online version of Scratch, but it is aimed at students 8 and up. Scratch Jr. was designed as the introduction to this, for students ages 5-8.
