My Project

The jobs of the future require coding skills!

My largely minority, inner-city public school students, ranging in age from kindergarten to Grade 5, are extremely interested in learning how to code.

Students in my school have individual Chromebooks and we have a variety of apps available for them to develop and apply coding skills. They actively engage in solving coding puzzles and are eager to "level up" their skills.

This year I was moved to a new classroom which is lacking in any sort of large screen on which to model these applications and instruct the whole class on these programs. Often I end up working one-on-one with a number of students to teach the same exact skill and I find myself wishing I had the ability to address that particular skill with the entire class. Gathering students around one small chromebook is not effective and duplicating instruction with multiple students is not an effective use of our short class time. A large television screen to which I could cast my laptop computer would allow me to model skills for the whole class at once, as well as allow the entire class to view and solve puzzles as a group.

Students work individually on puzzles after new skills are introduced. Background noise can be a problem (my classroom is under the school gym) and a class set of headphones would allow them to block out distractions and focus all of their brainpower on coding algorithms!
