My Students

I asked a student the other day what is so great about Facebook and YouTube. "They changed the world," the student said. As a science and STEM teacher, the technology aspect is often a forgotten component in driving a student's creativity and overall success. This is going to change in my classroom.

I am very lucky to be a teacher in a school with a great diversity of cultures and abilities.

The students here are respectful and motivated to work hard. Most are first or second generation Americans but realize the opportunities they have to make a real difference through a good education. Our school has worked hard to develop a strong sense of community and connection between teacher, student, and parent. As a science teacher, I am fortunate to have access to technology, including circuit kits, sensors, and alternative energy models that the students can use to really get a hands-on experience with how the world works, outside of the usual pencil and paper instruction. Our school's motto is "Work hard, get smart, and persevere," and in this sense, we encourage the students to think, question, and even harness the power of failure.

My Project

We are requesting the Raspberry Pis with power chargers to enhance our STEM curriculum. Computer programming is an essential skill needed to thrive in our future landscape. I would like to use the Raspberries to introduce computer coding to my students and give them a forum for creating both basic programs and animations and eventually move on to more complex tasks. The Pis will be used in conjunction with our math and science curriculum so our students can further engage themselves in these areas. After learning the basics of coding, the students will be able to develop their own math tools and formulas, as well as science imaging and simulations. They will learn the process for creating computer programs and their usefulness and application in the world around us.

These donations will really solidify the technology end of our STEM curriculum and give our students a real chance to branch out in using computers to create without boundaries. It will also give them the confidence to be able to use computers to influence others rather than for pure entertainment.

Through basic work in Python and Scratch, my goal is for our student population to see how endless the possibilities are in creating with this simple machine and how it can be used to help the world.
