Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is an economically disadvantage urban public school with over 70% of the students qualified for free or reduced school lunch. The school population is about 355 students for Kindergarten through Fifth grade. It consists of 3 programs: ELD, Spanish Bilingual Program, and Chinese Bilingual Program. I have been teaching the First Grade Chinese Bilingual Program for 19 years. Most of my students are new immigrants with parents speaking little or no English at home. For my students, they have the disadvantage of not being read to at their early years. They also do not receive much help with homework with their parents due to language barrier. However, these parents want the best for their children, and they put all their hopes and dreams in guiding their children as the leaders of tomorrow in my hands! Not only do I teach all the 1st grade standardized curriculum required by my district, I also maintain the students' first language by teaching Chinese language instruction daily.

My Project

My project goal with Ozobots is to introduce my students simple coding and teach them a variety of skills such as deductive reasoning while expanding their imaginations. These little robots are the perfect combination of digital and physical worlds for young learners as they can identify lines, colors, and codes.

Ozobots are mini robots that follow color and line codes programmed by students.

Vocabulary such as "senors", "patterns", and "code" are important for students to learn to program Ozobots. Students can explore how Ozobots work on printables I created, or they can create their own using color markers and white papers. Lessons in line thickness and curves vs. angles ensue, and even line thickness is a challenge as students begin to understand that coding is a precise thing! Students add in colors and begin to dabble in drawing their own Ozocodes correctly. Ozobots will then follow the color patterns on the surface and roll over to complete designated task.

I want to be able to provide a robotic learning opportunity for my low economically First Grade students so that they are more ready for the technological world.
