Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students embody the vibrant energy of their neighborhood and the hardworking attitude of the city in which they live. They are proud to call themselves New Yorkers. But regardless of their various backgrounds, they come to school ready to learn and to make lasting relationships with fellow students and teachers.

Their goal is college readiness - and ultimately, graduation.

Everyday, they strive to put their best effort in the classroom. That means participating in active discussions, relearning material to achieve mastery, and building each other up so that all students reach their potential.

My Project

At my school, I'm helping to lead the effort in bringing the 21st century skills of computer science to my students. This is the first school year that we're offering such a course, and I want to continue expanding the opportunities my students receive. There's no doubt that minority and female students are underrepresented in the field of computer science, and I want them to not only gain these skills, too, but to also know that they have a place there.

Bringing Arduino boards to our classrooms in Washington Heights offers a hands-on accessible approach to learning both programming and electronics.

Students will learn how to code on their computers and build circuits with their breadboards. The projects they can create are endless, from simple keyboards to mood lamps and maybe even a flying drone. Regardless of the task, my students will be learning real-world skills and engaging in true teamwork.
