My Students

I'm the science teacher at a charter school in Buffalo, NY. Buffalo is a city that's going through a lot of exciting changes right now, but unfortunately, it's still in danger of leaving some behind. Recent figures from the U.S. Census Bureau show that Buffalo has the 4th-worst youth poverty rate of all major cities in the United States.

My students are sweet, funny kids who are eager to learn, connect, and experience success.

Many of them have already gone through some real hardships and trauma, but they make me laugh every day, and it's really a joy to work with them. I can't imagine doing anything else!

My Project

I was hired this past summer to start science and enrichment programs at our school. I currently teach science to our students in grades 2 and 3 and provide various enrichment opportunities to all grade levels. Our students come to us with very little experience with even basic technology much less more advanced technologies. They're always excited to use technology, however, and love trying new things.

In the spring of 2020, we’d like to begin a coding and robotics unit.

While coding as we currently know it might be different by the time our students are in the workforce, the ability to learn and use a new technology as well as the other skills they’ll develop - problem solving, creative thinking, teamwork, perseverance - will serve them well no matter what they pursue in the future. Robots are also, of course, highly engaging to students and a great way to get them to stick with it while developing skills that are important but challenging. The majority of our students are African-American and critically underrepresented in all STEM fields. I would love to ignite a passion for STEM in them while they’re young and help develop that passion as they grow.

This project will provide us with four of Wonder Workshop's Dot and Dash robots along with accessories. While it's not everything we ultimately plan on having, it will help us get off to a strong start!
