My Students

I teach an amazing bunch of students at a Title I school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our school's neighborhood was ravaged last year by the historic flooding in Louisiana. Some of my students continued to come to school while staying in shelters, hotels or with friends and family. Additionally, 100% of our students receive free lunch, already experiencing financial hardships regularly. Academically, we have an extremely diverse group of students. Some are classified as gifted, but unable to receive services without transferring to another school. Some speak English as their second language, some have a variety of learning delays, and some have limited or no access to books or computers at home. They are the kindest, funnest, most outgoing group of little humans I have ever had the pleasure of knowing!

My Project

Some said it couldn’t be done, but we are ready to show what our first graders can do! Next year, our school will be hosting a Creative Sciences and Arts Magnet program. We want to give our students the opportunity to begin learning key coding and STEAM skills right now.

As educators, we are not preparing our students for the jobs of today, we are preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow!

Technology is a highly effective way to give students an engaging, independent experience, while also providing essential feedback on their work. With the Osmo system, we can take that experience one step further by adding the element of hands on manipulation that young learners need to engage their whole brain.

For long-term support of this project, I have requested a few complementary supplies. The dry erase markers are essential to the creative arts element of the Osmo system, but my students go through these supplies very quickly! So, I have ordered enough markers to get us through the year easily. I have also ordered a yearlong supply of white ‘magic’ erasers. Lastly, I have requested a class set of dry erase worksheet sleeves. In the STEAM activities, these will enable students to complete a planning or designing step without needing to wait for a turn on the Osmo or use several pieces of paper. They will have enumerable other uses in the classroom, all of which will help to reduce our use of scarce resources like paper and ink.
