Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have the privilege of working with an incredible bunch of kindergarten students. They live in a community with varying socioeconomic backgrounds, but predominantly low income. The school is Title 1 and all students receive free lunch and free breakfast. Their families work long hours and two-thirds of my class stay in the after school program, or extended care with babysitters.

A couple of my students are identified with special need eligibility, but they are ALL pretty SPECIAL in their own right.

Their high energy and active spirit requires a whole lot of juggling and differentiation in my instructional delivery. I am looking to provide tools that can support my students in developing and/or stimulating their curiosity and interest in coding and computer science.

My Project

I want to expose my kindergarten students to the possibilities of coding and computer science. I am certain that most, if not all of my students do not have access to such an opportunity.

Kindergarten is where EVERYTHING is possible with effort and a good attitude; what better place and time to bring the experience of coding for robots?

The activities offered by Botley will build on critical thinking and elicit explicit language for both my standard English learners and my second language learners.

I want my students to ask questions, explore and experience how their efforts can make a robot and bring it to life (animate). And I hope that these experiences are but the beginning on their STEAM endeavours.
