Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with an amazing group of fifth grade students in a Title I elementary school in Richmond Hill, NY. My students come from diverse backgrounds with varied educational experiences. My students are children who are learning English as a New Language work hard in learning English. They don't let the challenges they face in learning a new language get in the way of discussing their thinking, sharing their ideas and working with each other. Their resilience and dedication to do their best shines through every day. They love to share the books they are reading, the solutions to the math problems they find and help each other. Technology and the skills around tech are something that excites them all - it transcends any and all language barriers. Working with the technology that is available and sharing with each other creates a common language and experience that is necessary for success in the 21st century.

My Project

All of our students love time to work on the computers. Whenever new technology comes into the room - even 1 computer - the entire class finds a reason to go and use it. When coding was introduced to our class this year, everyone became glued to their seat during computer lab time. They problem solved, asked questions, helped each other, and worked the problem over and over until they got it. Regardless of languages spoken at home, coding and technology became a common language that everyone was able to understand. The excitement each student shown lasted well beyond the 2 periods they have in the lab a week.

The creative and exciting experience of coding becomes limited when we are out of the computer lab.

With limited technology in our classrooms, the students often have to share 1 piece of equipment among a large group of students. Not everyone gets an opportunity to interact with the technology alone or for a significant amount of time. This becomes frustrating. With the recent addition of Dash and Dot, the students love working with the robots coding them to move around. Through your generosity, with the addition of the Dash and Dot materials the students will be given an opportunity to do more with these great pieces by allowing the students to code and create their own unique codes for the robots to follow. This creativity can also be expanded with the addition of the Ozobots and their materials. Students will not be locked into previously created codes but create what they want. This will allow for more students to interact with these devices -allowing the class to expand their creative minds in smaller groups where everyone can have time to expand their imaginations.
