Coding 101

Help me give my students hands on learning. My students need a Wonder Workshop Pack, a Sphero, Ozobots, and an Osmo because computer science/coding is a skill that they are not getting in the regular classroom.

My Students

The reality is that when students represent different levels of readiness, different levels of instruction are needed. Through practical, research-based tools and strategies I want to engage students in learning experiences that will increase challenges to reach diverse learners on their level. I want to add computer science for the students to create and problem solve real-world activities in a safe environment. The students at my school do not have a lot of time or resources to experiment with different materials because they live in a need to need basis.

I want to add a coding to my classroom collection that connects creative thinking to build real-world application and problem-solving strategies.

As a teacher, it is my job to find ways to put updated material in the hands of my students and that is my plan with "Coding 101"!

My Project

The sudents will actively engage with Dash and Dot, Sphero, Ozobot, and Osmo to learn to code in all grade levels. The Dash and Dot Robots will be used to introduce the students to block coding through kid friendly programming with challenging math and science app puzzles. The Ozobot allows students to code through drawing colored lines to support lessons in math and science. The Osmo will allow younger students to learn math and science through play and interaction with classroom iPads. The Dash and Dot Robots will also incorporate music with the xylophone and mallet accessories through coding. The Sphero Robot will allow all age groups to experience coding through drawing code, block coding and text coding. I am the special education teacher at my school and I selected the above resources not only to engage students but to also engage the teachers and the stakeholders of the school community to incorporate STEAM education. Everyone needs to buy into the idea that the Future is NOW and we need to give our students the resources to prepare them for the world around them to compete in a global society.

Knowing how to code means that the students will be able to solve their own problems and craft solutions to their needs, but it also means that the students now have the ability to create solutions for other people in a global society.

Learning to code means the students will automatically become more in tune with technology.

Digital literacy is the ability to manage information successfully, using technology. It makes the student a creator of the Internet, not just a consumer.
