My Students

Who's excited about the computer lab? "Me, me me!", exclaimed the enthusiastic students. Our students love visiting the lab because we explore, create, research, and even code. Their excitement makes me strive for more ways to keep them engaged in the lab.

Our students are culturally and academically diverse.

We serve approximately 500 students. There are three classes on each grade with one being an Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) class that serves special education students. There are also two 12:1 special education classes and a new ASD Horizon kindergarten class.

With such a diverse group of students, it is important to have a variety of tools to meet their visual, kinesthetic, musical, or logical needs as learners.

My Project

Students need tangible materials to enhance their understanding of coding and math and be more critical thinkers and problem solvers. In the computer lab, we use websites such as Code.org and Kodable.com to teach computer science and to build on that, students would benefit from using tangible blocks to code and build their computational thinking. With the Osmo kits, students would have more hands-on play to create, explore, and predict their next steps.

I envision students rotating centers during each class and having fun while learning.

Students are highly enthusiastic about learning and how else can we encourage them to find a passion in coding and math then to give them more ways to play. This would encourage more computational thinkers for a successful future.
