Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Computer science allows students to be innovators. Design and programming touch so many areas in our lives. Whether it's creating an endless runner video game, designing an app to search available jobs, or perhaps controlling a robot to dump boxes in a basket, computer science empowers students.

Our school offers a concentration in computer science where students over the course of four years explore various aspects of the field.

Students come to us with such curiosity as to what it means to program a computer. Over the course of four years, some students become the hard core 10,000 line coders, others focus more on design and try to imagine new ways to infuse technology into our lives, while others find that though they like computers this is not the field for them. Regardless of what route a student takes, they all leave with a foundation and appreciation for computer science. Sometimes students write back that something they learned in a computer class has helped them out in college or that they have decided to pursue some aspect of computer science or information systems because of their experiences in high school.

My Project

There are several activities planned for these resources. Students study Java and C# over the course of two years. My students need 6 books for Java and C# Certifications. The various books will help students prepare for industry recognized certifications. These certification will set the stage for students to perhaps get a jump start on their career. Many students join our program because of their love for video games. XBox 360 has the unique feature of allowing hobbyist to create video games for the console using C#. What could be cooler than to tell a friend, "Hey! Check out the game I created for the XBox." The Raspberry Pi, Adruino, barcode scanner and Brick Pi will be use in combination with existing Lego Mindstorms and Tetrix kits to create physical challenges for students to merge engineering with their programming knowledge. One particular project planned is a real time classroom attendance tracker. All activities offer a sense of realism that goes beyond projects at the end of chapters.

Students learn better when they see the relevance of what they are studying.

In order to break away from the traditional textbook examples, these donations will allows us to begin projects where the students can really take ownership of their education. Students will be proud to share what they were able to accomplish with family and friends. There will be purpose behind what they are learning.
