Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work with the most amazing students in New York City. Our community is District 75 and we serve students with Intellectual Disabilities and Multiple Disabilities. A large majority of our community has Autism. These students use what is considered to be a disability as motivation to push them to achieve their goals in life.

Our students face a ton of obstacles in their daily lives to gain access to the world in the same way that general education students do.

These students use technology to bridge the gap between their needs and inclusion in the world. I am inspired by their triumphs on a daily basis. Most of our students have Autism which means that they don't enjoy the world more or less than us, they simply enjoy it differently. Our students love technology and participate in the Verizon Club Initiative, placing 2nd in their app building contest this past year

My students thrive communicating with symbols and technology. The opportunity for my students to learn computer based skills means the world to all educators. Let us allow them to take the world.

My Project

The school I teach at is D75 (district 75), that means that all of our students have Individualized Educations for their needs. Most of our students have Autism and intellectual disabilities, some have multiple disabilities. The bottom line is that my students love technology and even more importantly the NEED technology. Technology is the gateway to inclusion for my students and they deserve nothing less.

Attending this PD transcends simply getting a grant for equipment.

It gives our students motivation, something to hope for, and the potential to have a cool class they can look forward to. By attending this PD I can have a solid frame work for purposeful technology instruction, an investment that will make our students want to be in school and stay in school, which is the over all best thing for the health of our community. Technology will be the gateway to independence. Thanks for coordinating, CSTA!
