My Students

I am blessed this year to be teaching a STEAM class that is filled with eager and diverse learners. My first graders are full of life and always ready to learn using Next Generation Standard-Based materials. Of our two grade 1 classrooms that we have, our Integrated Co-Teaching class has a makeup with 65% general education students, 25% with special needs and 10% ESL students. 100% of our students receive free lunch.

With all of those statistics, our school still does not receive enough funding in order to provide for extra materials that the students will need to be college and career ready especially in technology.

My Project

By being a participant in Computer Science for All, our students are learning how to code as early as ages 5 and 6. Creating pseudocodes on paper is a good way to start mapping out how they would want the algorithm to go, but for some students who exhibit different learning styles, it makes sense to allow multiple ways for them to perform the task at hand.

Students would also benefit from the use of tactile materials.

Using logical skills, kids can work in groups to problem solve and develop a program that their robot will be able to follow. So not only are they engaging in rigorous discourse amongst their peers, but they will be strengthening the ways in which they tackle problem-solving. This, in turn, will trickle down into other content areas such as math and science.
