My Project

My fifth grade ELA students just finished reading the novel "Lemonade Wars" by Jacqueline Davies. They were extremely engaged in the book and anxious to keep track of the lemonade sales each day. By implementing this project, students will be able to connect their real-life business experience with the novel they just completed.

In this cross curricular, hands-on learning experience, my students can be actively involved in creating their own business plan while connecting to their novel.

Our goal is to design a stand and sell coffee, tea, and cocoa to our staff. We will also include other snacks for purchase. We plan on running the stand throughout the school year. The business will be open every Friday. As the weather gets warmer, we will change the drink menu to lemonade and iced tea. Once the business gets underway, we will open orders up to the older students in the building.

Students will begin by working in groups of four to design the stand and name it. They will then make a list of supplies, construct a menu & order form, plan out pricing, design advertisements, arrange a work schedule, form a play list for the stand, and finally decide what they would like to use their profits for. Once each group presents their plan, the students will collaborate to finalize the business plan.
