My Project

Some argue that little has changed since kids began kicking and throwing balls. As a veteran Physical Educator, I challenge that perspective. Throughout my career and life, I have seen many things change, including gender acceptance in sports, equipment, facilities, available opportunities for underserved populations, and the inclusion of physical education as a mandated academic subject in schools. The one thing that hasn't changed is the need to lead with an open mind and willingness to adapt teaching styles and perspectives to accommodate the ever-changing world.

Learning to play and playing to learn go hand in hand in Physical Education.

Human Kinetics offers a wide range of books and online courses to help educators broaden their perspective and continue to learn as professionals in Physical Education. I have just started a new Basketball Team with one of the other PE teachers at my Title I elementary school. I would like to deepen my understanding of coaching sports and basketball, specifically, with 2 online courses. Additionally, I would like a copy of the new National Physical Education Standards and a book of classroom games, to connect the sports content to the overall learning of my students. These professional learning opportunities will help me develop basketball training sessions to build confident student-athletes. I will also be ready to advise cooperating teachers and offer suggestions for games they can integrate in their daily classroom routines to get my student-athletes up out of their seats and moving more during the day. This will increase their overall fitness and health and help them connect learning between the gymnasium and classroom settings.
