My Students

There were approximately 111,600 homeless students attending district and charter schools in New York City during the 2019-20 school year; if these students made up their own school district, it would be one of the 30 largest districts in the nation. Students in temporary housing have worse educational outcomes than their permanently housed peers. Outcomes are particularly bleak for students living in the City’s shelters—38,000 students in 2016-17.

This year, I have been tasked to support our students and families that are experiencing housing insecurity and homelessness.

The best teachers know that they need to employ numerous strategies to reach their students; the best school social workers are much the same — we draw on a wide range of skills and knowledge to serve students in a myriad of ways. School social workers are trained mental health professionals who provide critically important services directly to students and families.

Our school is located in the neighborhood of Fort Greene, the heart of Brooklyn in New York City. Our school community is vibrant, full of visionaries, and rich with history and deep communal roots.

My Project

To experience homelessness and housing insecurity isn’t just to lack a roof over your head; unsheltered families sometimes live without the means to acquire the basic human comfort of cleanliness. Despite making up a majority of the NYC's homeless population, homeless families are often not visible in the way single homeless adults can be.

This project is about ensuring that all students in our school community have access to clean clothes and basic hygienic necessities.

Many homeless children have a hard time simply getting to school, because they are exhausted from sleeping in an apartment with more people than beds, or aren’t able to clean their clothes, or have slept somewhere far from their school, or have to miss school to attend mandatory appointments with their parents.
