With new and improved technology comes increased responsibility. The school where I teach is one of several public schools in our district that has gone from being a Pre-K through 5th Grade school to now being Pre-K through 8th grade. Our wonderful school is an inner city school with a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunches. I am our school's 6th - 8th grade science teacher and work with 107 students this year.

Three years ago our school was incredibly fortunate to receive a grant to update some of our technology. Our principal decided to purchase digital imagers (ELMOs) and projectors for every classroom. I can't tell you how our students have become more engaged in their learning with these new items. Of course with new technologies come new issues that are unexpected. One such issue is that when I am trying to identify or demonstrate a new concept to the class using a microscope, students can not see what I am seeing at the same time. While we do have old overhead transparencies, they are old, difficult to focus upon from the back of the class & have a substantial glare under the new equipment.

I was discussing this concern with another teacher and they suggested the PupilCAM. The students or I simply fit the PupilCAM over the eyepiece of any microscope; plug the USB cable into a computer and it instantly gives the power to deliver crisp live microscopic images right to a computer monitor at 640 x 480 full screen or VGA resolution. Using the imaging software we can then capture still images of specimens, capture multiple images and save to a gallery, print images for use as study aids, or even record movies.
