My Students

"It is today that we must create the world of the future." Eleanor Roosevelt must have had my class in mind.

I teach a 1st/2nd grade looping class of 24 awesome children in a low-income high-need school.

My class is made up of a diverse group of children ready to learn. My class has a wide range of academic skills: from children with little background knowledge due to limited experiences to gifted and talented students who are working 1-2 grades above level! I also have a bright child with Autism. I have children that come to school without any school supplies or lunch money; 67% of my school is on the free or reduced lunch program. I have very limited funds available to purchase supplies for my classroom: everything from writing and construction paper, to pencils, glue, and manipulatives. My class reaches for the moon with what they have but could land among the stars if they had the materials I am asking for.

My Project

I am asking for Mountain Math and Mountain Language Centers to use during independent literacy and math centers. Children work in groups on skills that are differentiated to meet their needs. These center flip charts contain 30 weeks of varied concepts and skills. I am asking for both 1st and 2nd grade editions to push my students who are working above grade level, while still pushing my struggling and at-level students. I am also asking for a resource for our morning meeting. Every morning we meet on the rug to help build a sense of community, establish a routine for the day, and incorporate academic skills into daily use. With The Buzz Book, I will have over 400 daily messages to choose from that contain math and language art skills. With the After the Buzz book, I can create connections in their daily writing to the morning message. Both books help put the pencil in the student's hand.

With your generous donation, my students will have year-long high-engagement activities to push their thinking.

With these resources available to my students for the whole year, I will have more time to devote to my students as well as planning. I will also be able to create high-level writers who are excited to pick up a pencil!
