My Students

My students are special because they represent a wide range of learners, both in terms of their social emotional development and their academic abilities. Two of my three classes are ICT and I teach with a co-teacher. Together, we strategize on how to best meet the various needs of all of our students. When planning, we think about the best resources and materials to use that will help push our students to develop the strongest conceptual understanding of the material possible. Our school uses a workshop model approach to teaching which focuses on students becoming independent thinkers and learners. Project work drives the learning at our school. The resources we would receive will allow us to implement our projects with greater success.

My Project

My 6th grade science students will be creating climate change podcasts. In order to conduct meaningful research to develop the podcast, they will need a wide range of texts focused on various climate change topics and written at different reading levels to ensure all students achieve a deep conceptual understanding of climate change through their research.

For each climate change podcast, students will need to develop an evidence-based scientific explanation to engage in scientific argumentation.

As students read across texts on their climate change topic, they will begin to synthesize information and form their own ideas as they make connections between what they've read. This will lead to the development of a claim that is supported by scientific evidence from their texts.

At the core of each scientific explanation, students will be expected to teach about how Earth's climate is changing and that it is largely due to the release of greenhouse gases as a result of human activity. The combination of the research texts, as well as reliable data sets from other sources will allow students to articulate these essential points in their podcasts.
