My Students

"Let's Get it started..read a book, Let's get it started...take a look!" Getting the students excited about learning to read and write is hard. I want my students to be excited and engaged to learn in all we do. With technology we will do just that!

I teach 4th and 5th grade hard of hearing students in a low poverty area in Michigan.

Most of the time when students have a hearing loss they can be behind 1 or 2 grade levels in literacy. Last year my students loss their teacher and had substitutes for the whole year. This caused them to be even more behind (2 and 3 grade levels). Despite the set back they still try hard to move forward and progress in all they do, but they sometimes get bored. I asked my students what they like to do for fun and all of them said they love the computer! I want to take that fun for them and help them progress in their learning.

My Project

Having a laptop in our classroom will help tremendously! I will be able to find reading programs for my students that will help in their reading fluency, comprehension skills, phonics, phonemic awareness and vocabulary. They will be able to get on the laptop if they finish their work early and I will be able to create a computer center so that when I am working with other students in small groups they will be engaged in a reading lesson. They will also be able to use them to take online assessments in the classroom (which is why headphones are needed as well). I want my students to love reading and having a laptop will help aid in their progression. Also, having fun while you are learning is so important because it keeps the students focused on what they are learning instead of daydreaming (which happens sometimes with them). With the laptop I know it will help them improve their literacy skills and help them rise up to the top in all subjects!

I want them to learn and grow while they are having fun. Reading stories is something students should want to do and be excited about it. With this laptop you will make that possible for them to become future writers, doctors, teachers and more with just learning how to read!
