My Students

One of the best ways to foster a love of music in a child is by teaching him or her how to play a musical instrument. Unfortunately, I teach in a high needs school where many students do not have the means to pursue private music lessons.

I strive to make sure that my students get an enriching and individualized experience in my general music class.

My students love to sing and perform. Incorporating more instruments will give them a focused outlet for their musical talents.

My Project

Percussion instruments add variety and excitement to our general music classes. These instruments are a necessary tool in the music room. They enhance our ability to read and perform rhythm and help children to learn how to differentiate between instrumental timbres. The students can use these instruments to perform rhythmic ostinati and create their own compositions to be played on the instruments.

Elementary music students need to be exposed to many different musical sounds, and these percussion instruments each have their own unique sounds and timbres.

Students will learn the different sounds produced by reading and playing rhythmic accompaniments on the castanets, sand blocks, and wood blocks. They will learn about the science of sound by creating the special sounds produced by the vibraslap, thunder tube and rainstick.

The hand bells will allow students to learn about high and low pitches while reading and playing music. They will take turns ringing each bell individually to perform melodic ostinati or decode a song written in standard music notation. The djembe will be an excellent percussion instrument for students to play when improvising rhythm or playing a solo.

Having a variety of unpitched and pitched percussion instruments meets the needs of an inclusive music room so that every child can participate and have an instrument in his or her hands at the same time.
