Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are motivated learners who don't let challenges stand in the way of our learning. We begin our day with an affirmation that reminds us that we are special and we can ALL achieve at high levels!

We are a Second Grade Integrated Co-teaching Special Education Class in a high need, at risk community within the New York City Department of Education.

We have students of various levels with various needs. Our school is very supportive, but lacks many resources that our unique students require. Our school is a Pre-K through Grade 8 school with a positive environment that encourages all students to strive for excellence.

My Project

Our students read at many levels and require deep, rigorous, guidance to improve their reading levels. Unfortunately, our classroom library and our school borrowing library lack enough books at the levels that our students require to be successful. Those book sets that are available at the needed levels do not have enough books for all students in given reading groups. These new books will assist students in independent reading and help students read in Guided Reading groups with the teachers. The hope and goal is that the students will use these materials to improve their reading levels.

Reading is essential to every aspect of a person's life.

What we teach here in Second Grade is the foundation that will be needed in every other grade and in life. Without various leveled books and a variety of titles, students have little opportunity to experience different texts. These materials will enrich our classroom library this year and for years to come with the potential to assist hundreds of Second Graders.
