Clear Eyes, Full Bellies, Can't Lose

Help me give my students a large variety of snacks to fuel their bodies and minds to keep working hard and learning lots.

My Project

In our high school Autism classroom, we work dutifully on job skills, independent living skills, and a variety of exposure activities like every other student. At our Equity Focus school- every student receives free breakfast and lunch. For big, grown men of 18-22, 350 calories from a mini muffin and a fruit cup doesn't fill them up, and they get agitated and lose focus around 9:00 A.M. To combat this, we have a snack station and everyone gets to choose what they want at 9:30- and it gives them a boost.

Growing men need more food than a small pastry- especially ones with Autism and ADHD, who expel so much energy.

This practice also is formative to their communication skills- as nonfunctional communicators, my students need highly motivating items to request, and chips, goldfish, and fruit snacks are their FAVORITES! They want these snacks bad enough that they WILL get up and ask for them or travel- an important phase of the Picture Exchange Communication System that we follow here at our school.
