My Students

My students are fantastic, wonderful, amazing, and pleasant fifth graders who are in their final year of elementary school! Very soon, they will be off to middle school where they will continue to do wonderful and amazing things in their academic and personal lives!

Despite my students’ strong and sincere zeal for learning, they are daily victims of systemic challenges pertaining to finance, race, and other extraneous variables.

I teach in an ICT classroom, which means many of my students are exceptional learners! Our neighborhood in Brooklyn is one of the most economically devastated towns in New York, with 40% of its citizens living below the poverty line (an income of about $20,000 a year for a family of four). Over 75% of my students live in poverty. As a result, my students' school is a Title I School (according to the United States Department of Education) because of "high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families." In essence, my students’ unique and highly intelligent minds are not being adequately or equitably educated or bettered due to bureaucratic reasons beyond their or their teachers’ control.

My Project

This past week has been quite irritating because of the unwelcoming winter weather. It has snowed two times, including in the morning while my students were coming to school. Though in addition to the difficulties associated with the weather, one of my students who moved to the United States a few months ago (from Jamaica) described seeing snow for the first time as "wonderful"! Her smile was priceless! However, winter wonder yields health blunders...

With the harshness associated with the winter season approaching, my students are in need of rudimentary, but critical supplies to help keep themselves healthy and hygienic.

In order to be in an adequate health condition and ready to learn, my students must be and feel clean, which is why I am requesting disinfectant wipes and paper towels for them. Furthermore, tissues are important to aide in abating any illnesses that could worsen thereby disrupting my students' well-deserved education.

Essentially, my students will be able to come into school clean and ready to learn, after I receive funding from this project! Once bad health is no longer a barrier, their minds and bodies will be solely focused on learning!
