My Students

Many of my students are from low-income families and receive free lunch. Our school is the only high school in our area and this year 100% of the students will receive free breakfast and lunch for the school year. Sometimes, eating a healthy, well-balanced meal happens only in school for many of them. Being able to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs for them to take home and share with their families is something we have been wanting to do in class for a long time. We also have livestock to take care of that we use as learning tools in the classroom. Taking the livestock section one step further and harvesting them for food will teach the students even more about self-sustainability.

Sharing the bounty they raise in class with their families will solidify the teachings and experiences they have in class.

They will be able to share with others how they worked and harvested what they grew and raised then turn around and share with their families what we ate.

My Project

We have been doing awesome things on the farm since the beginning of the school year, but there are some things that we don't have the equipment for. We need a blower and brushes to clean the screen on our chicken coops, and a chainsaw to cut the many saplings growing around the farm. We have tried to cut the saplings with a hand saw but that was very difficult. With these added tools, we can do so much more on the farm.

Cleaning on the farm is so much easier with the right tools and equipment.

Teaching my students how to use the chainsaw properly and with the proper safety pants and gloves will give them skills they can use for the rest of their lives. No matter if they are boys or girls, we will all learn together and who knows, maybe one of them will end up working for tree trimmers and will use a chainsaw every day for their career. Life skills at its best!
