Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach vibrant kindergarteners that are growing their love for school and learning. My students come from diverse backgrounds primarily from Afrian and Latino heritage. Many of which may be experiencing a school setting for the first time or may be English language learners. I cannot speak about my students without mentioning the amazing families whom everyday beat the hardships of poverty to give their children an opportunity to grow and flourish. Teaching in the South Bronx come with particular challenges but enthusiasm is never one!

My students are like seeds that need water to sprout.

In kindergarten, children will learn the alphabet, letter sounds, high frequency words, then evolve into writing and reading. They will learn their shapes, and what numbers look like, but they will also learn to think and investigate. A lot of our learning occurs through class discussions, where we practice respecting others opinions while creating your own. My students will be learning how to be a friend and embrace kindness. In Kindergarten there’s a lot of growing to do and for that we need water!

My Project

It is no secret that NYC school buildings are old and so are their pipes. Therefore, my students will not drink water directly from the water fountain, which increases their exposure to lead, instead they will drink fresh water that has been filtered.

We will work as a community to share the responsibility of taking care of our water bottles and use them appropriately.

For instance, the water monitor will be in charge of filling up the water bottles in the morning. Water breaks will be embedded in the daily schedule after movement breaks and mindful exercises. Children will be encouraged to notice how water helps their bodies refresh and clear their minds. Together, we will be active participants of our well being while growing stronger and smarter.
