My Students

It is amazing how much cleaner a classroom becomes when students are given the tools to clean! Kids make messes. Messes are fun to make. Cleaning... not so much. Unless given the tools to clean.

My students are very creative.

We regularly complete projects in which the kids are given an opportunity to make messes and let their creativity flow. You might think that it is the custodian's job to clean the classroom at the end of the day, but they are only required to vacuum once every 3 days and take out the garbage nightly. In Seattle, I find it especially important to do this every day so that the kids aren't sitting on a dirty floor space at the rug.

My Project

Imagine a busy classroom. Now, if you have a child, imagine their busy bedroom. Chances are, cleaning up their bedroom after playing is quite similar to cleaning up the classroom at the end of the day. Who wants to do that? Well, my students love to clean when given brooms and/or a vacuum.

When students clean up after themselves, they take more ownership in the classroom.

In addition, walking into a clean classroom and having a clean workspace (on a desk and surrounding floor area) sets the tone for the day.
