Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a great school in the South Bronx where students come to school ready to learn despite their circumstances. Our school is located in a high poverty area and many of our students live in housing projects, shelters or in single parent homes. Despite some of these struggles our students see our school as their second home. They feel safe and loved by all of the staff. We are a true community of learners striving to be a little better each day.

Despite this sense of community, many of our students are unable to come to school with the supplies they need.

I teach third grade literature and art to over sixty students. I teach all the reading and writing fiction units and also incorporate visual thinking strategies using art pieces to develop accountable talk. I often see my school as, "The Little Engine that Could," because every year we make progress. We are city wide Renewal and Showcase School where we open our doors to schools in NYC to come visit and see our best practices!

My Project

As the new school year is rapidly approaching, I want to provide my students with a clean, organized and germ free classroom. Most of my students are unable to purchase the supplies they need in order to learn. So it's crucial that I provide items like wipes, cleaning solution, paper towels, Kleenex, etc to allow them to have their learning needs met but also their basic health needs met.

These supplies will allow my students to have basic health and learning needs met at the start of our school year and throughout.

Students take ownership over their learning and classroom community when they are part of creating the community. Having all of these cleaning supplies will help us create a community of learners that take care of the needs of the classroom and will increase engagement and teamwork. Two essentials to learning and life.
