My Students

Five years ago in the South Bronx, where only a small percentage of students graduate from high school, our school began with kindergarten and first grade. We now house pre-k through 5th grade students, many of whom have been with us since day 1, and are on a path to college success.

Students are encouraged to become advocates for change, to take intellectual risks, and to develop a lifelong love of learning.

Within our school, we have a deep sense of community. Scholars see themselves as part of a team, which consists of students, staff, parents, volunteers, etc, who work together towards a common goal: to get our students to and through a 4-year college of their choice.

My Project

According to the Furman Center, more than 50% of the children in New York City are living in poverty, which is higher than the national average. Research shows that students whose basic needs are met will be more successful in the school environment.

The sad reality is that there are students within our school community who leave school at the end of the school year with many uncertainties, some of which pertain to personal hygiene.

We have decided to send toothbrushes and toothpaste items home with every student. By providing the students with these items, your donation will ensure the students' basic needs are met throughout the summer, while they are not in their regular routine of going to school each day.
