Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The addition of a washer and dryer to the Life Skills Special Education program is essential for supporting the development of practical, real-world skills for students in grades 7-12 with severe disabilities. These students will benefit from hands-on experiences in laundry tasks, which will directly contribute to both math and science goals in the curriculum.

In terms of math, students will practice skills such as measuring detergent and fabric softener, calculating the time needed for wash and dry cycles, and budgeting for household expenses.

They will also apply concepts like sequencing, time management, and data collection as they track the number of loads completed or monitor changes in clothing size or color.

From a science perspective, students will explore concepts related to physical and chemical changes, such as the role of heat in the drying process, the properties of detergent and its chemical interactions with water, and the understanding of how different fabrics react to various washing and drying cycles. Additionally, students can study energy efficiency, learn about the environmental impact of washing and drying, and how to make eco-friendly choices.

Providing these hands-on learning opportunities will help students gain independence, foster problem-solving abilities, and strengthen life skills that are crucial for their future success in both the home and workplace. A washer and dryer are not just household tools—they are vital educational resources that will enhance the student's ability to engage in real-life tasks while meeting their academic and personal development goals.
