Clean Learning

Help me give my students clean uniform clothes with a washing machine. Many students’ homes and foster homes change constantly. A washing machine will help them have clean clothing to learn in. They want to be clean.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 100% Special Education students. They all have Individual Education Plans for Social / Emotional reasons. Most of them have experienced severe trauma in their lives which has caused them to have both learning and behavior challenges. Many of them are living in group homes, foster care, or with a parent who is having difficulties. They are in middle school, so in addition to the challenges they face in their personal lives, they are also struggling with the difficulties of beginning adolescence and the middle grades.

Despite all of the difficulties in their lives, my students have very big hearts.

They are able to demonstrate gratitude and appreciate those who take the time to make them feel special. Some of them are very strong readers, and some are just learning how to read. Some of them have the skills to overcome their life situations, and some of them are learning these skills every day. They all want to feel important and be loved. We try to make them feel this way while also providing an education so they can be successful in this world.

My Project

A washing machine for our school will help students to wear their uniform and feel good about their smell while they learn. Many of our students live in group homes, foster homes, or in apartments with their families that have limited resources. Many students live in neighborhoods where it is not always safe to use the laundromat. They care a great deal about how they smell and how they look (they are teenagers), and are reluctant to wear uniform clothing if it is not clean. Having a washing machine at our school would allow us to support the learning of our students by taking an easy step. Having clean, fresh laundered clothing available would save our students a great deal of suffering.

Having a washing machine at school will not only increase student morale, but it will increase student responsibility.

Students could earn additional responsibility points by assisting with the laundry, and those who did not already know how to do laundry could learn. Students who otherwise did not have clean clothing will not have to fear ridicule of their peers, and they will have the added benefit of feeling loved and cared for by their school. A washing machine would bring our Special Education School a world of benefit. Students who generally are overlooked by society will now feel important.
