This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Recently my first graders went through a bout of many students getting sick and being out of school. We had a great science and health lesson about handwashing and keeping our hands and nails clean so we don't spread germs or get sick. We also talked about how we feel better when we keep ourselves clean and it helps us when we get older.

My first grade students are so eager to explore their world but exploring means getting dirty.

I want to build on the student's excitement for science and health by getting them their own hygiene kits so they can keep their nails clean and trimmed and take charge of their own hygiene routine. I plan to give each first grade student their own nail kit (clippers, nail file, and nail brush) so they can become more independent and also make them more aware of the importance of good hygiene.

I'm also getting some books about germs to build up our library in this area.

This is the perfect age for kids to get involved in their own care. They want to be independent and are willing to learn what to do to make that independence happen. My goal is to help the kids and parents make this transition into older childhood smoother. We want kids to stay healthy and to be instrumental in their own health journey. This project will help them throughout their school time and into their adult lives. Being curious about science will help them learn these lessons that will affect them personally.
