Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My sixth grade Humanities students are curious, thoughtful and engaged readers, writers and historians. They are dedicated to their reading lives and to thinking critically about texts. They share their powerful voices and life experiences from the East Village of NYC in their writing. And they investigate the many wonders and complications of history from the earliest humans to our society today.

We are a public middle school in New York City but what sets us apart is the diversity of our students.

Roughly 40% of our students are Latinx, 20% Asian, 20% Black, and 20% white. We come from many socioeconomic levels, and more than 60% of our students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. Our students have a wide range of abilities: about one in five are Special Education students, many are English Language Learners. many of our eighth graders go on to selective public high schools in NYC. The one thing we all have in common -- we LOVE our school community!

My Project

Going to school in New York City has many, many perks. BUT, clean classroom air in the middle of a global pandemic is not one of them! Our classrooms need professional grade air purifiers. This Austin Air Purifier has been used to clean the air for first responders during other national crises (9-11, Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy) and are used in children's hospitals across the country.

NYC school buildings are old and lack proper ventilation.

Most don't have working HVAC systems. While our school will strictly adhere to CDC guidelines by sanitizing surfaces and enforcing social distancing, we need more than that. We need effective air circulation and filtration. According to Linsey Marr, an environmental engineer and professor at Virginia Tech, “In theory, if an air purifier removes viruses from the air, it reduces concentrations in the room and thus reduces the potential for exposure.”

We need your help to keep our 6th grade classroom safe so that students and teachers can return to classrooms with confidence.
