Claymations: Tolerance in (Stop) Motion

My students need modeling clay, armature wire, sculpting tools, stop motion animation kits, and an HP Pavilion workstation so that we can celebrate diversity and tolerance through the creation of claymations.

My Students

Our school is nestled within a rural community full of hardworking families. My 10th-grade students, the proud legacy of their families, are the epitome of curiosity, exploration, and creation. While they enjoy and appreciate traditional methods of reading and writing, they absolutely flourish when provided access to supplies and technology that facilitate their learning in a meaningful and transformational manner.

Our school enrolls over 2,500 students with 50% categorized as economically disadvantaged and 44% categorized as "Minority: Non-White" (2015-2016 School Improvement Plan Data).

With such a diverse population, teaching tolerance while focusing on academics will help nurture students who are well-rounded and supportive of the diversity that exists within our school and in the surrounding community; not to mention the wider world. Helping to nurture empathy and celebrate diversity will help my students be global citizens.

Despite our school being categorized as "High-Poverty," it does not lessen the richness of my students' passion for learning nor their desire to have the most current tools and technology to showcase their academic proficiency and personal passions. With local AND national supporters engaged through DonorsChoose, I have a sincere belief that our classroom will CONTINUE to be supported and transformed!

My Project

With the popularity of the cinematic "LEGO Movies" and classics such as "James and the Giant Peach" or "The Nightmare Before Christmas", stop motion animation is a familiar medium for many of my 10th-grade English Language Arts students. That is why I am so thankful for this funding opportunity related to tolerance because I can engage my students in a meaningful exploration of tolerance through a medium that they will understand! Tolerance is an abstract ideal and is difficult to fully inculcate through discussions and conversations alone, especially if a student has never experienced the adverse effects of intolerance. With the funding of this project, I hope to offer all of my students the ability to, literally, display their understanding and experiences related to tolerance in a fun, collaborative, research-based, and relevant manner.

Imagine students being able to understand tolerance and develop a sense of empathy by collaborating on a "Claymations: Tolerance in (Stop) Motion" project to highlight how tolerance and intolerance has an impact locally, nationally, and globally.

Through the use of a variety of types of modeling clays and tools, the stop motion animation kits, and the HP Pavilion workstation, my students will be able to explore and capture tolerance/intolerance in a variety of projects throughout the year that will, hopefully, broaden their perspective of tolerance and intolerance at work in the world. We can explore misconceptions, biases, and stereotypes in contemporary as well as historical times and capture those moments/discussions through claymation which can then be shared with other teachers, students, schools, parents, and the community at large. Creating claymations will allow us to truly spotlight tolerance and empathy in a captivating manner so that my students can create, discuss, share, and continue the conversation on how tolerance and intolerance have both shaped and refined the world.
