My Students

Looking back to last year and considering that we had less then a $300 budget and I spent hundreds of dollars of my own money for over 300 students, I'm amazed by how much we created together. With DonorsChoose maybe we can have even more materials and they can actually glaze their clay.

The Salmon River Central School District serves approximately 1,525 students in Pre-K through 12th grade.

It is a small rural school district located in the northernmost reaches of New York State. Nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and on the shore of the Saint Lawrence, as well as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. Thanks to Title VII and the Johnson O’Malley federally-funded programs, Salmon River CSD provides educational enrichment programming for its Mohawk student population, which comprises 63 percent of the total school enrollment. Salmon River is one of 13 districts within New York State which contracts to provide an education to its Native American students, with a commitment to preserve the Mohawk tradition, culture and language within the school system. Title VII is a federally funded formula grant program that currently services 1,017 Native students.

My Project

Ceramics in Studio Art class is the favorite project the students make during the school year. It's something that the student looks forward to because it is not like any other project. Students are building and sculpting with their hands and learning about 3-D form. We have a kiln, clay and some tools, but need glaze to make their ceramic project complete. This activity will allow students to make something very special to them that they can keep forever.

I'm so proud of the artwork my middle school students create!

They are extremely talented and deserve more art materials so that I can expose them to a well rounded art education experience.
