My Project

Art students go through a lot of materials! In my alt-ed classroom, kids from grades K-12 come in seeking sensory stimulation and creative expression that allows them to flex social-emotional skills and prime their brains for a more successful learning experience in their regular classroom. Plenty of our art supplies can be used many times over, like brushes and markers, but ceramic clay and glazes need to be replenished more frequently for the young artists at my school. They make a lot of amazing pottery and sculptures!

Sculpting with clay is a rewarding sensory experience for my students that fosters fine-motor skills and creative problem-solving at all age levels.

We start with pinch pot bowls and then rolling flat slabs to make hanging ornaments, and from there, student creativity takes off into an amazing array of functional and decorative ceramic artwork! Last year, a student told me a friend from his old school saw several of his clay pieces in an art show and said “I didn’t know you were an artist!” These are the stories that encourage me to continue providing high-quality materials to my alternative learners and budding artists.

Ceramic clay is the ideal three-dimensional medium that takes advantage of other supplies already in the classroom like sculpting tools and the kiln. While clay is a consumable material, we recycle every bit to reuse until a finished artwork is fired in the kiln to be taken home. We are requesting funding for high-quality ceramic clay and colorful glazes to make our creations food-safe and last forever. Thank you for helping us start the school year off with ample ceramic supplies!
