My Students

There is something magical that happens when my high school students touch clay in class everyday. They relax. They stop talking. They use all of their senses. They put their phones away. And they focus. These dedicated students need clay and glazes in their art program and we need your help!

My school is one of the most diverse public schools in the city of Philadelphia.

It is a school with a high level of poverty, where budget cuts and lack of resources are really felt. The school does, however, maintain a steady flow of creative and performing arts classes and clubs for students to be involved in. Students choose Ceramics as part of the visual art program because they enjoy building with their hands and want to learn more about 3D arts and the craft of clay. All ceramics students have taken at least one art course in high school and many go much farther, taking every art class we offer. Ceramics is particularly attractive to the creative student who prefers to build and see in 3D. It is the only 3D course we offer right now and is integral to the art program.

My Project

Students begin with little to no knowledge of ceramics and leave with an understanding of materials and the wide variety of ceramic art. They learn about the history of clay and different cultures who use clay. They also learn about the marketing of ceramic arts and the place of ceramics in contemporary art. Some examples of projects we tackle in Ceramics I are tiles based on Islamic Design Principles, organic form sculptures, functional coil pots, and jewelry. Some lessons/units are based on the work of a contemporary ceramic artist or a group of artists working together in a certain region of the world. Some are based on close observation of a real life item, and some are based on the thoughts and ideas of the individual student. I ask that students use other artwork as inspiration and look within themselves for inspiration. Whatever the assignment, students will learn new skills and techniques, and gain confidence in their ability to design, build and finish an original piece of art. My students need new clay to create functional and sculptural ceramics. My students need underglazes and glazes to decorate finished work.

Your donations are so important to my students art experience and sense of pride.

For many students, this class is why they come to school, everyday! It means everything to us that ceramics happens. In two years offering Ceramics at my school, classes have doubled, and interest is growing. Students see us selling our work, going on field trips, and creating 3D pieces to be displayed throughout the school. All of these things encourage ceramics students to take pride in and focus on their work.
