This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are unique in their personalities and background but deeply connected in their commitment to learning more about the world and discovering their role in it.

My students are active learners invested in working together in creative ways to share what they are learning and truly teach others.

They share a deep interest in the world and make the most of every learning activity I provide to them, and even better they work together to create their own enriching experiences.

My Project

All of my students work hard every day towards goal of becoming bilingual. Anyone who has tried to learn another language knows how hard it is, but also how incredible it is to be able to communicate in two languages. As a teacher I emphasize the importance of language not just for good grades, but most importantly as a tool to communicate and connect. That is why I incorporate experiences that help students think about how they can use their language skills beyond the classroom. One of the most effective and loved activities is “café conversa” when I follow a story or lesson by turning the classroom into a cafe and serve students a yummy warm (decaf!) drink and a treat while students practice speaking in Spanish about the book as if they were in a cafe. The students love and benefit from every aspect of activity. They learn more about the lesson by discussing with each other, develop their conversational Spanish skills, use their imagination to act as if they are in a fancy cafe, and last but not least they of course love their treats. This activity was so simple and so effective that I definitely want to keep it going, and do it more often. Last year I was limited by finances and the time it took to prepare everything in the teachers lounge and bring it up to the class. That is why I would like to have the supplies and tools I need to open up our little cafe more often and see how students dialogue develops even further!
