This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are bright and hard-working English Language Learners in an economically disadvantaged Houston High School. Most of my students have immigrated to the United States in the last three years (and some of them, even more recently). I've had the opportunity to loop with them, which means that I taught them as sophomores last year, and I'm with them as juniors this year. The students are working every day to learn English and earn their diplomas. This is not an easy task!

My Project

My students and their families do not have a lot of time or money to put into being prepared to learn. The school doesn't provide much in the way of classroom materials either. Some of the students have not learned basic organizational skills and struggle to keep track of their work, but they want to learn.

These supplies will help my students learn literature, writing, and organization.

I have pocket folders and notebook paper from a previous project, and I'll be purchasing 40 composition books on my own, but we need some other items. File folders will allow students to begin a portfolio of finished projects and organize the work that makes them feel proud. Students will use duct tape, brads, post it flags, and rubber bands to personalize their "interactive notebooks" with functional items such as a clasp to keep it shut, a pencil keeper, and a book mark. Tape, colored paper, and glue sticks will allow students to create foldables for their notebooks and other projects, too. Cardstock will be used to create flash cards and manipulatives for learning activities. Because students often use their personal devices (phones) for translating, researching, and completing online articles, we need a charging station. This project also includes many pencils and erasers, as well as an electric pencil sharpener (our last one died due to an unfortunate run in with some staples in 2015).

With the help of generous donations, the students will be able to practice organizing their materials, which is a skill that will carry over into their other classes and further education as well. They will be able to complete language and writing lessons each day without worrying about where they'll get the paper, pencil, or other necessary supplies.
