My Students

Every day my students increase their knowledge of American Literature and Composition, and the important themes raised by our readings. We focus on the American Dream, when and for whom it is a nightmare, and how America's values and institutions are transformed over time.

My school is something of a miracle.

We are a high poverty urban school with a large percentage of English language learners and special needs kids. Most of our students do not have parents who attended college, and many parents did not complete high school. However, the tone of our school is one of success and engagement. We have many wrap-around services to support our kids. And in the classroom, we have high expectations and ever more effective teaching (thanks to inspired leadership). We expect all of our kids to learn, and they do!!

My Project

When teaching essay writing, I want to help my students understand what textual evidence they need to include to make a compelling analysis. Thus, before our major essays, we make posters culling out the most important quotes from the text, and writing commentary about them. For "The Crucible" for instance, we use quotes to show the moral decisions of various characters, and how these affect the larger community. For "Their Eyes Were Watching God," we study major symbolic motifs in the book, and show how they help enhance the narrative. The posters then are mounted gallery style in the classroom, and students can refer to the quotes as they organize their essays. The artistic aspects of making posters are particularly helpful for visual and hands-on learners. It's also a fun break from more arduous forms of study.

Most of my students are college bound.

They need to learn to write a sophisticated essay in order to succeed there. Even for those who have no college plans, the analytical thought involved in preparing for and writing an essay makes them more thoughtful citizens of our democracy. My students need colored paper, sharpies, computer toner, and colored pencils. Neither my kids nor I can afford the kind of art supplies that the wonderful generosity that Donors Choose provides.
