My Students

I teach a fun bunch of students with special needs in a high poverty neighborhood in Brooklyn.

They're almost all diagnosed with a learning disability. Reading so much as a paragraph is a daunting task. They become very easily frustrated and discouraged. They are in the only special needs class in a gifted and talented school. They want so badly to meet the expectations set for their peers next door.

My Project

My students need lots of color--assorted markers, highlighters, colored pencils, and paper. They also need tons of eraser caps. With these colorful materials, my students will be able to highlight, annotate, draw, and color their way to a deeper understanding of any text--across subjects. Highlighting in different colors helps my students organize their thoughts. This makes reading a lot easier. They can draw, color, and label diagrams in science, present ideas and thoughts in graphic organizers in ELA, and work out a problem step-by-step in math. I have come to realize that they are more productive when they're excited about the materials they're working with. A new color in the highlighter bucket gets them excited about reading that new text. Color coding helps them stay organized in their notebooks.

These materials will make reading less of a job and more of a fun-filled activity as it should be.

They will lift a great deal of the burden that my students' disabilities put on them.
