This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the heart of Houston's Fifth Ward is where my students and their families reside. A community full of rich culture and pride that often goes unappreciated and overlooked. A community in which poverty affects the majority of the families that I serve; yet my students come into my classroom smiling and ready to learn on a daily basis.

They are already working extremely hard to break the cycle of poverty that they are currently a part of.

Each of my scholars understand the importance of their education and how it can unlock the doors to their aspirations and dreams.

My students are driven, hardworking, and persevering kids who are developing oral language skills, reading comprehension strategies, and mastering their social emotional development. They are inspiring because they always work with the end in mind and are always seeking ways to master their goals. Given the pre-set trajectory of their lives; they are knocking down barriers and working toward a strong academic career.

My Project

Classroom supplies shouldn't be a factor in determining my students' academic success. However, this school year due to the impacts of Hurricane Harvey that is what has happened. My classroom is in need of basic math, literacy, and classroom supplies that can ensure rigorous, hands-on, and authentic learning can occur. We need a listening center, readers, lap trays, math manipulatives, bean bag chairs, sound phones, write and wipe boards, dry erase markers, file folder games, magnetic storage boxes, markers, and a laminator.

Recently, scholars in my classroom have been sharing supplies to complete projects and activities.

These materials will allow for each student to have the materials and supplies necessary to complete various classroom tasks and bring life back to learning. These materials will be able to be incorporated into all subject areas and allow me to create learning experiences that will last throughout the year.
