My Students

We are a very diverse CA Title I middle school with 80% of our student population qualifying for free and/or reduced price lunch, 17% gifted and talented, 13% English learners and 12% with disabilities. The students are hard-working and eager to learn but face many challenges outside of school. Despite these challenges, the students come to school everyday with an optimistic mindset

and teachers are often left with finding ways to get their students ready for the academic challenges ahead.

A typical day is never the same each day. Students are greeted at the door with a smile, but once the day begins, we are off to various meaningful tasks and group projects. I want my students to know that math can be simultaneously meaningful and exciting. This is done by making connections to real life experiences and engaging in the math through conjectures and enrichment activities.

My Project

My superstar students need basic classroom supplies in order to keep them succeed! These supplies help them stay organized and ready to learn. By the middle of school year they have no lead for their lead pencils! We also have consumable math textbooks that are over an inch thick and very heavy to bring to class daily. We use the twin pocket portfolios to separate the textbook into units. This allows them to keep their math units organized and only bring part of the book with them to school. Students have a couple of science writing assignments that are written in pen. "Crossing out" seems to be the norm but with the correction tape they can keep their paper nice and neat.

My students are very creative and I love to assign them assignments that allow them to explore their imaginative side when possible.

Having the proper materials allows them to maximize their creative potential. Using colored pencils that break all the time sucks.

As for me, I use certificate paper to give awards at the ending of the year and the Sharpies are for my posters and anchor charts in the classroom. Lastly, the array of colors in the pack of dry erase markers emphasize specific content on the whiteboard.

Thanks so much!
